WHAT WE MISSED

This project started as a celebration of my local football club Ayr United. I began this project in 2021 during a spike of coronavirus cases within Scotland. It was therefore ruled that fans of football would not be allowed to attend games within these sacred stadiums, but from the safety of their homes. I decided to adapt and continue my exploration of the club throughout the following year. In doing so I documented the experience of football with no fans; a concept rather alien to the culture within Scotland. The games felt hollow and this emphasised the importance of fans to a club. Using imagery I shot in the isolation, behind closed doors, and with the return of fans. I show the contrast between the two scenarios. Football without the emotions of a fan-filled crowd is a shell of the sport. 'What We Missed' is not just what we missed during the pandemic, but also what football itself missed...
